The Reionization History and Early Metal Enrichment inferred from the Gamma-Ray Burst Rate

چکیده
Based on the gamma-ray burst (GRB) event rate at redshifts of 4 ≤ z ≤ 12, which is assessed by the spectral peak energy-to-luminosity relation recently found by Yonetoku et al., we observationally derive the star formation rate (SFR) for Pop III stars in a high redshift universe. As a result, we find that Pop III stars could form continuously at 4 ≤ z ≤ 12. Using the derived Pop III SFR, we attempt to estimate the ultraviolet (UV) photon emission rate at 7 ≤ z ≤ 12 in which redshift range no observational information has been hitherto obtained on Visiting Professor, Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, Sagamihara, Kanagawa 229-0012 Japan PHD Fellow, JSPS

Expected Number and Flux Distribution of Gamma-Ray-Burst Afterglows with High Redshifts
If Gamma-Ray-Bursts (GRBs) occur at high redshifts, then their bright afterglow emission can be used to probe the ionization and metal enrichment histories of the intervening intergalactic medium during the epoch of reionization. In contrast to other sources, such as galaxies or quasars, which fade rapidly with increasing redshift, the observed infrared flux from a GRB afterglow at a fixed obse...
متن کاملBlack Holes from the Dark Ages: Exploring the Reionization Era and Early Structure Formation with Quasars and Gamma-ray Bursts
The cosmic reionization era, which includes formation of the first stars, galaxies, and AGN, is now one of the most active frontiers of cosmological research. We review briefly our current understanding of the early structure formation, and use the ideas about a joint formation of massive black holes (which power the early QSOs) and their host galaxies to employ high-redshift QSOs as probes of ...
متن کاملProbing the dark ages with redshift distribution of GRBs
In this article, we explore the possibility of using the properties of gamma ray bursts (GRBs) to probe the physical conditions in the epochs prior to reionization. The redshift distribution of GRBs is modelled using the Press-Schechter formalism with an assumption that they follow the cosmic star formation history. We reproduce the observed star formation rate obtained from galaxies in the red...
متن کاملCosmic Dispersion Measure from Gamma-Ray Burst Afterglows: Probing the Reionization History and the Burst Environment
We show a possible way to measure the column density of free electrons along the light path, the so-called Dispersion Measure (DM), from the early [∼ 415(ν/1 GHz)−2(DM/105 pc cm−3) s] radio afterglows of the gamma-ray bursts. We find that the proposed Square Kilometer Array can detect bright radio afterglows around the time ∼ 10(ν/160 MHz)−2 s to measure the intergalactic DM (& 6000 pc cm−3 at ...
متن کاملGRB Cosmology and the First Stars
Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) are unique probes of the cosmic star formation history and the state of the intergalactic medium up to the redshifts of the first stars. In particular, the ongoing Swift mission might be the first observatory to detect individual Population III stars, provided that the massive, metal-free stars were able to trigger GRBs. Swift will empirically constrain the redshift at w...
